Austin, it’s been three years now since we first interviewed here at step-on, so we thought it high time to check back in with you! When we interviewed you in 2003, you were a great rider with no sponsors. Now you’re sponsored but you’re a shit rider! Only joking.

How has your riding changed though, since then?
Ok, thinking back to compare it to now. I know my riding’s improved, after 5 season’s I’d me massively disappointed if it hadn’t. But changed? I don’t really think it has much, that might be a question someone else would have to answer for me...

How many seasons have you done now?

5

When do you think was the turning point when you realised you were really able to compete with some of the best riders in the UK and Europe?
I remember feeling a real sense of achievement placing 5th at the 2004 Brits Big Air. The standard of riding was high, riders like Scott, Dom, & Gendle were riding impressively well. It surprised me to see the top 10 with my name in amongst the names I’ve known and admired from the snowboard mags. So that was when I think I realised I had a real chance as a Brit competitor.
Still a long way to go before I can get anyway near the standard of the ‘best riders’ in Europe! I’ve tried my hand at TTR’s, will keep trying too, but some European riders just blow your mind with their standard of riding.

Which comp, out of all you’ve been in, was the most fun?
The Battle of Waterloo for sure. It was a jam session format in the Avoriaz Park, the park I love to ride all the time and riding with some of the UK’s elite. Every rider in the UK team were those which I admire and rate so highly, so it was awesome seeing everyone ride so well and to be a part of it just topped it off. That was a good day, absolutely knackering too though as I got over exited and totally exhausted myself!
More recently, a comp at the new Noux Les Mines dry-slope in north France. That was a great day too.
